Search Engine Ranking Position (SERP) refers to where your website appears when users search for your keywords. For example, if your website sells widgets, you would want your website to appear when a user searches for keyword phrases like “buy widgets” or “cheap widgets”. But, just being listed in the search results is not enough.

Any search can return hundreds or thousands of results, and most users are not going to click on the 268th website in the list. You need your website to appear towards the top of the list. In other words, if you want traffic, you need good search engine rankings.

How Do Search Engines Determine SERP’s?

Search engines consider a number of factors when determining where your website should appear in the search results. The age of your website, load speed, content keywords, etc. all make a difference. But, one of the most important considerations is the quantity, quality, and relevance of your backlinks.

Backlinks (also known as inbound links) are the pages out on the internet that link back to your website. Links are an important part of algorithms for major search engines like Google. Not only do they help search engines find your website, but they also count as a “vote” for your website. Basically, if someone links to your website, it must be important and deserves to rank higher in the search results.

What Kind of Backlinks Improve Rankings?

Just about any link will count as a vote, but some votes carry more weight than others. Some of the things that go into a good quality backlink include:

Page Relevance
If you have a site about plumbing, a link from a page about plumbing will be much more effective than a link about fishing. When building backlinks, search for pages that relate to the content of your website.

Site is Indexed
When a site is “indexed” that means that it is listed in the search engines. A link on a site that is not indexed will do nothing for your website since the search engines do not know that the link exists.

By default, all links are do-follow, but sometimes people use plugins or manually add a no-follow tag. No-follow tags tell the search engine spiders to ignore the link.

Site Authority
When you apply for a job, a recommendation from a CEO or highly respected individual will carry more weight than a note from your 6 year-old son. The same is true with links. Backlinks from sites that have authority with the search engines are more effective than links from random sites that just popped up yesterday.

How Do I Get Backlinks?

There are really only two ways to get backlinks. You can build them manually or buy them. To build them manually, you can comment on blog posts, post on forums, write articles and submit them to directories, or search the internet for relevant sites and contact webmasters to ask for a link. Building backlinks manually is definitely doable, but it is incredibly frustrating and time-consuming.

The alternative is to simply buy backlinks. For more information, check out our suite of link-building products.
